$100 Worth of Learning

by Barb Langlois

One hundred dollars for learning a lesson may or may not sound like too steep a cost to pay, but for me, literally burning money this way turned out to be a very valuables lesson on learning to listen to my intuition.

Intuition is one of those funny things. In my experience in healthcare, it is so valuable for patient care yet I hear it so often dismissed as “no big deal,” “I just knew” or “I do it all the time.” It is not recognized as the valuable tool that it is.

Same is true in our home life. Intuition guides us. It is our body’s way of telling us if something is right or wrong. It also is the same guidance system that tells us when our kids aren’t telling the truth (or is it just my kids that try and put something past me?). It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, we have all been blessed with this amazing guidance system.

Recently I attended an intensive week-end seminar in Calgary. It was fabulous learning and I really enjoyed the seminar leader – he had great energy, was very knowledgeable and clearly loved what he was teaching. I’ve been to these types of seminars before and generally at the beginning of the seminar, the leader asks for 100% participation. This usually means the days will be long with few breaks so in order to get the learning, participants need to stay in the room. It also usually means some of the activities may be a bit uncomfortable (taking participants out of their comfort zone) but that’s the purpose, it’s about growth and learning. I’m always in 100%.

One of the things we were asked to bring, to this event, was a $100 bill. I kept wondering what we would be doing with this money. At dinner on the first day, I brought up the topic of the $100 and openly wondered what we would be doing with it. I said with much certainty, “Well, we certainly won’t destroy the money because money is to be respected. It brings a lot of good into the world. I would never destroy my money!”

About 9 o’clock that same evening, the seminar leader asked us to bring out our $100 bills. Trepidation filled the air. Once everyone (450 people) had their $100 bills, he proceeded to show us what we would be doing with them. We would be weaving through the rows of chairs towards the front of the conference room. Once at the front, we would approach a seminar assistant who was holding a burning candle. We would dip the end of our $100 bill into the flame and as it started to burn up the edge of the bill, the seminar assistant would say “drop it” and we would immediately drop the $100 bill into the bucket of water that was sitting on the floor between us and the seminar assistant.

Reading this your eyes have to be as wide as mine were: “Burn $100 bill? You’ve got to be kidding! That will be $45000 of burnt money in the room!! Was he insane or what?” And then, as if on cue, the leader emphatically says “this is not a group learning lesson! It is not about the amount of money in the room! It is about you and your learning!”  At that particular moment, I was in a state of shock. I couldn’t believe I was being asked to burn my $100 bill. One part of me was rationalizing, “I said I would give 100% - there’s got to be some good learning here, or they wouldn’t ask us to do this! It’s only $100. I’m in!” and another part of me was screaming, “No, don’t do it. That $100 can buy a lot of things! Never, ever destroy money!!”

We started weaving up the front, everyone with their brown $100 bill. I felt like throwing up as I struggled with the ambivalence within me – do I follow along and do it or do I say “no?” What was it again, that I had said at dinner, with so much certainty? I followed my line of people up to the front of the room.

Now, I’m not going to tell you what happened because I don’t want to ruin the seminar for you, if you ever happen to attend it. What I will share is that this was the most profound learning I have ever received. I will also share that I did not listen to my intuition. I need to say that again: I did not listen to my intuition.  I literally felt sick that I didn’t listen to “ME!” That night I tossed and turned as I wrestled with the decision I had made: If I was willing to do that, where else in my life was this showing up and to what effect?”

Some of you reading this are probably thinking, “that was a cult seminar, Barb went to.” Well, I’m here to reassure you, it was nothing of the sort. It was some very clever and powerful staged learning whose purpose was to make participants look closely at the decisions we make about money and how we make them.

And now I turn this point over to you – what happens to you when you don’t listen to your intuition? Are you like me and immediately know when you’ve made a mistake and then say things like “I knew I shouldn’t have done that” or “I knew that was going to happen?” How do you know when you haven’t listened to your intuition – do you feel angry, sad or disappointed? Most importantly, how do you know when you have listened to your intuition – do things feel right, easy and the way they were meant to be?

Our intuition is our internal guidance system trying to keep us on tract. We can choose to listen to it or ignore it. You know the value of tuning into it for your patient’s benefit, but what about for your own benefit? Do you use it? I hope so. For me, it is the most valuable tool I own and it certainly lets me know when I’ve messed up.

By the way, I must tell you that I learned more than $100 worth of knowledge at this seminar whether I burnt the money or not – and isn’t it illegal to burn money??
