Life Gives Us What We Think About

Have you ever noticed, you get what you’re thinking?
Let me explain. Those of you from southern BC are well aware, tremendous amounts of snow fell during the last half of December and into January. One early morning, I was driving to the gym with a friend, in all the snow. We were talking and the conversation turned to my avoidance of a difficult conversation I needed to have with someone. The avoidance of this conversation was holding me back in achieving a goal I had set for myself. As we were talking, I was driving slowly along some side roads, through a lot of unplowed snow. My vehicle, which is a Toyota Sienna van has good tires and I’ve never been stuck despite using it as a 4-wheel drive at times. As our conversation turned to my avoidance of this particular conversation, we entered a side street intersection, which again had not been plowed. In the conversation I was tight, resistant and scared. I just didn’t see how I could have this conversation. You know what’s coming next, don’t you? On the road, I was driving very slowly but easily manoeuvring through the snow when all of a sudden I got stuck . . . and I mean STUCK! No-one was around (not that we were in a remote part of the country or anything) meaning no-one was walking or driving by (they could have been peeking out their blinds though). I couldn’t get the van to move forward or backwards. My tires just spun. In the conversation I was stuck too. I didn’t see how I could go forward or even backwards. I was scared to have the conversation but not having the conversation was holding me back in life. I was stuck in my life and I was stuck in the snow!
As I was trying desperately and frantically to un-stuck (yes that is a new word) my van, I was, at the same time, feeling extremely frustrated in the conversation I was having. I was trying to rock the van by going forward – reverse, forward – reverse, with initially no luck. The van wheels just spun. I continued trying. In my conversation, I was resistant, I was closed, I couldn’t see a way out. Through all this frantic CHAOS I reluctantly agreed to have the dreaded conversation, within one week. “Within one week!” I frenetically continued rocking the van, muttering to myself “I can’t believe I said that.” Ever so slowly the van’s tires started to grip the snow. After several more attempts, the van gained more ground and we became un-stuck as quickly as we became stuck. I was still frustrated about the conversation and angry that I had gotten the van stuck. As we drove out onto a plowed road, my friend encouraged me to notice what had just occurred. A few moments later, the epiphany hit me (trust me when I say, this epiphany didn’t hit me in the intersection): As I became emotionally stuck in my thoughts through avoiding a conversation, my vehicle became physically stuck in the snow. As I allowed myself to become un-stuck in my thoughts, my vehicle became un-stuck.
Yes, life does work this way, if you stop long enough to pay attention! Life gives you what you think about, usually in unexpected ways. Let me share one more example with you.
My brother and his wife were in Mexico last month. They had received an incredible deal online, but when they arrived at the hotel, their room was less than stellar – leaking air conditioner, broken lights, uneven tiles, and a view of the air conditioner at the adjacent restaurant. My brother commented, “I was faced with a very unhappy wife or upgrading to a beach front room for $240 US.” I am proud to say, he did what every good husband ought to do, he upgraded to a beautiful beach front room. Both of them were pleased with their accommodations and grateful they had a beautiful ocean-view room, they could easily afford. Everything had worked out well. A couple of days later as they were sun tanning on the beach, my sister-in-law decided to go beachcombing. As she strolled along the beach, she noticed something bobbing about in the ocean. She waded into the water, reached into the rippling waves and grabbed a ziplock bag. As she opened the bag, her heart skipped a beat. Inside the ziplock bag was. . . $240 US! The exact amount of money they paid to upgrade to a beachfront room! Yes, this is a true story and life does work this way. They were thinking gratitude and abundance and they got more of it! Life gives you what you think about.
What are you thinking? If you are unsure what you are thinking, just look at your life situation - it always tells the truth.
