Who You Gonna Be?

by Barb Langlois

It’s a good question, isn’t it? Who you gonna to be? Are you going to be the person others think you should be, the person you think you should be, or the person you were meant to be?

It’s not an easy answer. I’ve spent the majority of my life trying to be the person others think I should be. Let me tell you, it’s hard work! It’s only in the last few years that I have set out on the path of being the person I was meant to be and it’s a struggle, at times. Let me qualify that statement: it’s only a struggle because of the temptation to do something easier, to fall back into a familiar routine and take the easy way out. Sometimes becoming the person we are meant to be involves a bit of hard work. Do you ever struggle to be you?

I’m currently reading Suze Orman’s book, “Women and Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny.” In the book, she makes several points about how women have repeatedly over the ages, denied their own power! She says:

“There is a huge disconnect

  • between what we know and how we act;

  • between what we think and what we say;

  • between how we present ourselves to the world and how we really feel about ourselves insides;

  • between what we deserve in our lives and what we resign ourselves to;

  • between the power we have within reach and the powerlessness that rules our actions.” (p.10)

WOW! Can this really be true?

As individual women, are we really being the person we are meant to be? I don’t know. What I do know is that as women we are doers, usually for other people. We are moms, wives, daughters, partners, aunties, supportive friends, cooperative colleagues (usually), cheerleaders (for whoever needs cheering), caregivers and voracious volunteers! We are amazing people. In all of this though, where are the dreams, goals and passions of each mom, wife, daughter or auntie? Have they gotten lost (or replaced) in all of the doing?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself: Do you ever have thoughts such as “if things were different, I would . . .” “when the kids are grown I will . . .” “I’d like to ________, but it’s too hard, takes too long or costs too much money?” These are all signs there’s a dream, a goal or a passion simmering deep within you. It’s a sign that there’s something more for you. I know it’s easy to push these thoughts aside and become busy in all of the activities of being a woman. It’s easy to justify all of our other duties and ignore our own dreams – after all we are needed. I’m not denying that. I just think we have become so good at doing for others that we’ve placed ourselves dead-last in the deserving field. We deserve to treat ourselves, BETTER!

All I can suggest is the world becomes a better place when we do what we are meant to do. We’re happier, healthier and actually laugh more. We have more energy to assist others in all of our other roles. We actually value who we are and acknowledge the power we have within reach.
