Sometimes Things
Don't Go As Planned

Each year at the beginning of the year, I make a list of goals that I plan to accomplish. Some of these goals are short term and some are long term, some are about me as a person and some are about my business, but they are all about moving me ahead in life toward my ultimate goal. Do you have an ultimate goal for your life? Many of these goals (most) pull me out of my comfort zone and in that way, help me to grow (that can be a scary thing). The achievement or lack of achievement of our goals is a reflection of our life – even with the best laid plans, many times things don’t go as planned.
I introduced my kids to skiing this year. They each received lessons, rentals and lift passes as a Christmas gift. We set out to Manning Park on December 30 for our first family day of skiing. The kids had a 1 ½ hour lesson and when they were finished, they hopped on the chair and were easily ripping down the hill.
At about 2:00pm we were on the chair heading up for yet another run. We were only about a quarter of the way up when the chair STOPPED. The chair had stopped lots throughout the day for the usual reasons – someone falling as they got off – one of those was me; someone needing the chair to slow to get on – sometimes that was us; anyway you get the picture. This time however it lasted a while – 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes – it’s snowing, wind is blowing, it’s FREEZING up there and did I mention how heavy skis feel when they dangle? At 2:50, the chair started up again – everyone cheered! As we got off, everyone was gathered at the top to talk to the ski patrols, right in the chair load off area – hate that – had to steer into the snow bank to avoid a law suit!
Anyway they told us they would give us hot beverages for the inconvenience. While a nice gesture, I didn’t think it quite fit the discomfort we experienced. We all skied down. At the bottom, ski patrols told us to go to Guest Services. We did and as we got into the room, I realized I was very, very cold. My fingers were white and I was shaking so bad, I could hardly talk. The manager asked me if I needed assistance and I said “no.” Very quickly we were at the front of the line and as compensation for being stuck on the chair for 50 minutes, we received a ski pass for all 5 of us. Now that fit the discomfort we experienced, I think. . . While the Guest Service attendant was making out the pass for us the manager asked again if I needed assistance and I said through chattering teeth and shaking body, “I’ll be ok.” He responded, “That’s what they all say!” He called a first aid ski patrol to help me. Internally I felt really odd but I couldn’t put a name to it. They took me to the first aid hut and warmed me up – told me I had been hypothermic – go figure! Once I got warm I realized how fuzzy I had been.
Things certainly didn’t go as I had planned but in the end I was warm and we have another free day of skiing – kids love that!
Same is true in life – many times things don’t go as we plan but that doesn’t mean we need to become angry, discouraged or give up. You never know what the end result will be. I didn’t achieve as many goals for 2009 as I had planned and I could easily become discouraged and think I’ll never achieve them but I recently read “there’s no such thing as unrealistic goals just unrealistic time frames!” OK, they’re back onto the list for 2010!
I encourage you to write out 2 or 3 goals for yourself for 2010 and then put them away. The simple task of becoming clear enough to write a couple of goals gives the message to your mind to begin moving toward it. The danger is in not taking time to think about what you want to achieve. You are then at the mercy of only being able to “react” to what life throws at you – rather than “create” what you want from life.
With wishes for an exciting 2010!
